What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds and How Are They Different?

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds created in a controlled laboratory environment rather than formed naturally within the Earth.

They have essentially the same chemical composition and crystal structure as natural diamonds and can display the same exceptional brilliance.

The fundamental differences between a Natural Diamond and a Lab-Grown Diamond relate to their origin, method of creation, rarity and different market dynamics.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes.

Laboratory-grown diamonds consist of crystalline carbon and possess essentially the same fundamental chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds.

They should not be confused with diamond simulants such as cubic zirconia.

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. What differs is how it was created.

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Created?

The two principal production technologies are:

HPHT — High Pressure High Temperature

and

CVD — Chemical Vapor Deposition

HPHT uses conditions of extremely high pressure and temperature to grow a diamond crystal.

With CVD, the diamond develops inside a specialized chamber, where carbon is gradually deposited onto a diamond seed.

Both technologies can produce gem-quality diamonds suitable for fine jewelry.

How Are They Different from Natural Diamonds?

The most significant difference is origin.

Natural diamonds formed through geological processes within the Earth over extremely long timescales.

Lab-grown diamonds are produced in specialized facilities using technologically controlled processes.

This difference in origin also affects rarity, supply and pricing.

Can You Tell the Difference with the Naked Eye?

Usually, no.

A high-quality laboratory-grown diamond can visually resemble a natural diamond with comparable characteristics.

Reliable determination of origin requires specialized gemological techniques and professional equipment.

This is why appropriate grading documentation and transparent disclosure are particularly important.

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Evaluated?

When selecting a lab-grown diamond, we consider the familiar 4Cs, just as we do with natural diamonds:

  • Carat — weight

  • Color — color grade

  • Clarity — clarity characteristics

  • Cut — cut quality

However, a diamond should not be selected solely according to the grades shown on a report.

Its actual dimensions, proportions, cut quality and overall visual performance can also make a significant difference.

What Is the Price Difference?

Lab-grown diamonds are generally available at substantially lower prices than natural diamonds with comparable characteristics.

This may allow a buyer to select a larger carat weight or higher color and clarity grades within the same budget.

However, the two categories have different supply and market characteristics and should not be viewed as financially equivalent products.

What About Resale Value?

The future value of any diamond is not guaranteed.

In the laboratory-grown diamond market in particular, advances in production technology and increased supply have significantly affected prices.

A lab-grown diamond should therefore not be purchased with the expectation of a predetermined future resale price.

At Anweva, we believe clients should understand this distinction before making their decision.

Natural or Lab-Grown Diamond?

There is no single choice that is right for everyone.

A Lab-Grown Diamond can be an attractive option when the priority is obtaining a larger carat weight or higher specifications within a particular budget.

A Natural Diamond offers the geological origin and rarity of a gemstone naturally formed within the Earth.

The appropriate choice ultimately depends on the buyer's individual priorities.

The most important principle is transparency: understanding exactly what you are purchasing, where the diamond originated and the actual characteristics of the individual stone.
